Naga bodies concerned over factional fights

Senapati, May 18: The United Naga Council (UNC), All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM), Naga Women's Union, Manipur (NWUM), and the Naga People's Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR-South sector) share the pain and sorrow over the loss of human lives in the armed clashes in and around Dimapur.

The four Naga frontal organisations expressed that the prevailing situation in Dimapur has been the outcome of confusion created by "ourselves now involving innocent lives".

The organisations appealed the Nagas and said that at this juncture, "we want all to stand firm and committed to the cause we stood thus far and also in the ongoing process of healing and reconciliation within out Naga family".

The Naga bodies that stated that they totally reject all elements targeting the lives and properties of particular community or tribe "in this unfortunate conflict which we term it mindless and unheard of before in our society".

The joint statement of UNC, ANSAM, NWUM and NPMHR opined that such acts or actions negate "our proactive role" which the Nagas have agreed to in the hard won peace process and the ongoing political negotiation.

"Here, we continue to re-assert based on our social and culture values that all civil societies like the tribe hohos, the Church, students, women etc.

must pay a role of peace maker in a time like this and beyond", suggested the Naga organisations in a joint statement.

The statement then expressed with lamentation that "we are of the opinion" that situation may further deteriorate if the lives and properties of innocent civilians are at stake.

"Therefore, we appeal to Naga hoho, ENPO, NMA, NSF, ENSF, NPMHR, church leaders, and others mass based organisations to take pro-active role in shaping our society to the right perspective exemplified by our pioneers, leaders and elders.

We also strongly urge the State government and concern authority to give maximum effort in providing adequate security to all concern," appealed the four Naga social organisations on Sunday.
