‘Include women in peacekeeping’

Dimapur| May 10 : With escalating violence in the last few weeks, it has become a matter of great concern for the general public in terms of safety and the manner in which the two underground groups have been continuously jeopardizing innocent lives because of their armed conflict is something to reckon with. On the other hand, despite the presence of administration, police, civil society groups, one imminent force that needs to play a greater role in conflict prevention and even within the entire peace process are women, points out political analysts.
The overwhelming picture of a woman (as published in a local daily) trying to stop underground cadres from escalating violence is something that many people regard as a ‘power’. It was observed that the Naga peace process has been going on for the last few decades and has over the years tried to include voices and opinions from various sections of society. But one voice that remains unrecognized is that of women.
“The picture of the women in the paper is very symbolic. It reaffirms that ultimately the authority rests in the hands of those who are not a part of the violence,” Neichu Angami, Freelance NGO Consultant says. Neichu points out that woman have a great role to play in conflict resolution and their part cannot be denied. She pointed out that Nagas are so caught up with managing the conflict, that the long term resolution has taken a backseat. “We need a meaningful process and prevention is the most important thing right now or it will spread like wildfire,” she says. Neichu mentioned that women organizations should form a collective voice, come forward and be a part of the solution.
The Naga Women Hoho President, Hukheli Wotsa said that recent incidents illustrates that women cannot be excluded from the peace process anymore. “Violence will increase if women do not intervene and people need to realize the importance of including women in the Naga political dialogues,” she said.
At the Nagaland Women Commission seminar held recently, Hekali Zhimomi, Director, NEZCC had mentioned that women have a great role to play in peace keeping; and reiterating her opinion she said that women need to be included in peacekeeping. “Women have more creative strategies and more open to exercising a lot of options. We are more understanding and we have to tap that,” she said.
She also urged women to take a stronger stand in peace keeping and that others needed to recognize the stand that women take on. With women undauntedly coming out to tackle the situation, NPMHR Convenor, Atoho highlighted that men often tend to have a misconception that they can tackle conflicts resolutely, but women are often better pacifiers. He also said that Naga women need to fight for a place in conflict management and it can go a long way to bringing a solution to the Naga political imbroglio.
