Naga issue: So far not so good
I have been thinking of writ-ing for quite long. But with the hope that eventually people will change their mindset and work for the good, I have kept mum. I am sure there are thousands of Nagas like me, burning within, yet holding their breathe hoping for a good transition.
I was expecting the dignified politicians, bureaucrats, the student leaders, organizational leaders, church organizations and voluntary individuals to voice something like mine, but every time I go through the papers, I see only the same old childish factional allegations. I do not deny people appealing for peace and factional ceasefire in the papers (that too specifically mentioning the territory limit which simply indicates their willingness for the warring factions to kill outside their territory!)
It is the public who is to be blamed for all the mess. It is our irresponsibility. It is our escaping and non involvement attitude which has complicated the problem. Who can deny that the Naga issue is not getting into a web of complications and that the goal is farther and farther? Who can deny that our hope of sovereignty is becoming just a flickering candle in the wind? If we the people are not pro-active at least in suggesting the best non-violent way (as has been our choice) of achieving our goal, if we are the same non-involvement individual, I am cynical of an easy and early solution.
It looks like everyone is expecting someone to even write and suggest something. We seemed scared to write even! This atmosphere is probably because we behave like well informed goodies ready to take chance for recognition when it comes to the media, ready to point our fingers where as we don't have time to put down our ideas. When someone expresses something, we not only discard the idea but also reject the person and even the clan. We still have not learned to play constructive criticisms. Writing something hot therefore has become like belling the cat. Added to this, the wise are of course lazy (to write). But I believe by this time everyone must be humming "Enough is enough!"
We were young and now we are grown up. We have seen of how from one sprang up this many factions; of how our gestures have changed and how we shake cold hands; of how sensitive we have become that we are no more comfortable even with our immediate neighbors and close friends. What a disgrace left for us the younger ones!
Insecure and frustrated we are already because the task has become greater and tougher each year. It has therefore become very much necessary for us the public to weigh and scrutinize every aspect of each faction and their individual leadership by various appraisal methods and standards even going to the extent of their abilities such as communication skill, smartness in facing interviews, personal integrity, outlook and many more, apart from the patriotic spirit which is of course mandatory as national workers.
It is of immense importance for every Naga to be thorough with the ideals and visions of every faction - their likes and dislikes of the rival party and the reason for the same. It is necessary for us to know that they are striving for the cause of the nation from the GoI and not merely engaging in unnecessary fights within themselves. It is necessary for us that they are frequently exposing the cause whenever and wherever they can so that they bring people's attention and intervention. It is important that their media and network does not confine only in this small land. It is important that they are departmentalized and are actively functioning and always striving. It is important that they put their minds to improve and strengthen the system in all aspects - technically, militarily and continually horn them. It is important that they don't undermine the typical Indian way of playing safe and wasting time by any means. It is important that they know the Indians are heart and soul to squash them; and that they are no easy.
Let us express our right. Let us face the national media and debate over it. Let our columnists put them down in the papers. This is how every successful struggle happened in our history books. The recent presentation of a Lok Sabha MP of outer Manipur, Mani Charenamai on the Naga issue is highly commendable. It is pure expression of the truth of our right. I feel there's nothing wrong saying that everywhere anytime and not only during the stipulated negotiating table. It will be wise on our part to be aware that all eyes and ears are on us, and that the frequency and degree of our effort is counted and measured. It is important for all the factions to keep in mind that disunity and hard-hearted factionalism is a crime for us because your disunity is slowing and hindering our journey to freedom.
You ought to remember as born in Christian families that killing and disunity among yourselves at this stage is a real curse - something the Israelites experienced when they turned away from their God - misunderstanding, chaos and fear. Most of our hearts were broken when you parted and formed factions; and yet today you killed each other!? Enough is enough! I am a Naga. Why do you stagnate and foil my demand and right with your biased chicken hearted objectives? You sold our right and our time. It will be wise for you to know that our hopes and dreams rest on you and that our eyes are set on you.
We were all eyes on the DAN Govt. for what they will do for the Naga issue, but your disunity and chauvinistic attitudes have shut their mouths and crippled them only to beg for unity in every platform. Dear patriots, all your stories and allegations in the news papers are boring. It is womanly and childish. It doesn't impress us anymore just as chicken-fights don't impress anyone. It is because of your interference in all policies which has left Nagaland far behind the developmental race. Blame not the UPA Govt. and muddy not yourselves in the pool of seasonal election politics. It is the UPA Govt. which has a heart for the Nagas. But it is the election politics that has spoiled the sport and brought about a different impression on them.
I am not a supporter of any faction. But I am beginning to dislike all the groups because their devout national workmanship is diminishing and their true color which is filled with hate and greed is evincing from within them now and then. The future course of your action will prove your national workmanship and patriotism. If killing continues, you are a mere low-level, ignorant national worker without patriotism in the first place.
To conclude, let me suggest the common formula which everyone has been suggesting for the 50 year old Naga issue. There are more formulae but given to apply, will be hazardous and so left it for the next option. Here's the first formula: Stop Killings immediately + Top rival leaders meet with 'sure compromise' attitude, shake hands, sit down and resolve the differences + Chalk out common plans and targets + Reshuffle leadership and create new Departments to accommodate them + schedule the earliest date for a joyous memorable uniting ceremony. This will yield the fastest result.
